las cosas han estado un poco movidas por acá, pero hace unos días y gracias a las lluvias, una joya natural del lugar donde vivo se ha hecho bien presente y no puede un amante de la naturaleza ver algo así a ignorarlo. Así que claro, aproveché para hacer imagenes y compartirlas con ustedes en este espacio.

La planta que les comparto hoy se llama Tigridia pavonia, pero también se le conoce como flor del tigre o en Náhuatl se le llama Oceloxóchitl. El nombre le viene por el patrón de coloración moteado que presenta esta especie en su flor. Que si bien no se parece en nada a un tigre, si es muy semejante al patrón de coloración que presentan los Ocelotes, especie de felino nativo de México.

Esta es una especie de la familia Iridaceae, que puede alcanzar entre 30 y 150 cm de altura. Tiene un bulbo subterraneo y puede pasar largas temporadas enterrada.

Esa característica de pasar largas temporadas enterrada es un mecanismo de supervivencia para evitar condiciones ambientales adversas. En el caso de la planta que nos ocupa hoy emite hojas y flores solamente en temporada de lluvias. Cuando esta especie comienza a florecer es una fiesta de colores. Hasta donde yo he posido conocer, no hay otra especie siquiera medianamente semejante en la Ciudad Universitaria. Lo que la hace completamente única en su entorno.

Y Tigridia saca másximo provecho de su singularidad, crece y florece solo cuando las condiciones le son propicias, No busca mezclarse en el contexto, segura de si misma y de que su belleza atraerá la atención de los visitantes deseados. Produce sus semillas y tan rápida e inarvedtidamente como llegó se va. Hasta el año próximo cuando las condiciones le permitan reiniciar su ciclo.

Quizás deberíamos ser más como Tigridia y vivir nuestra vida en nuestros términos, crecer cuando los ambientes nos son propicios y marcharnos sin reticencias cuando dejan de serlo.

Things have been a bit busy around here, but a few days ago, thanks to the rain, a natural gem in the area where I live has become very visible, and no nature lover can see something like this and ignore it. So, of course, I took the opportunity to take some pictures and share them with you here.

The plant I am sharing with you today is called Tigridia pavonia, but it is also known as tiger flower or, in Nahuatl, Oceloxóchitl. The name comes from the mottled color pattern that this species has on its flower. Although it does not resemble a tiger at all, it is very similar to the color pattern of ocelots, a species of feline native to Mexico.

Perhaps we should be more like Tigridia and live our lives on our own terms, growing when the environment is favorable and leaving without hesitation when it is no longer so.
